The ticking clock


Have you ever noticed that sometimes you can hear the clock ticking and sometimes not!

It happens to me a lot, I can sit in the same rooms with the same clock, sometimes it ticks sometimes not, tick tick.

This is absolutely nothing to do with the clock, it is all to do with me! It happened this morning, I was texting a friend, we were both grumpy, they suggested why not do a Byron Katie? This is a method Byron created to turn the conversation around and check if it’s still true. If you want to know more there will be something out there on the internet.

The turnaround worked and suddenly the clock ticked!

I’d got out of my grumpiness instantly and the clocked ticked and kept ticking. Thank goodness I felt better, back in balance and the quiet presence I really like.

My interpretation to all this is that when your grumpy or in pain or stressed or anxious, to keep surviving and living everything is done using too much tension, I assume this includes hearing as when I’m present the clock ticks.

When was the last time you heard the clock tick, heard birdsong, heard the sounds of the forest? Give yourself time to listen, give yourself time to be present, give yourself time to be here.

The silly thing with your time is that it only exists in a moment, a moment you can’t hold on to, a moment you can’t wait for, a moment that is here now; the best moment you will ever have.

This is a message to you and equally to me, STOP waiting for the right moment because it is now!

How’s your toes?


We all constantly engage with people even thought we don’t notice it, for example having an emotional response when watching a movie, a play or listening to music; emotions rise, and you may have tears, or you may fight your hardest to stop your tears. This is the communication I mean.

Have you ever walked into a room; you can feel something has just happened; you can feel the mood of the room. Sometimes this feeling is not very nice or equally it may feel buoyant and good.

These senses are all communications, many of you have desensitised yourself to these senses not by choice but what through life’s stresses and strains.

During my Alexander Technique Teacher training I’ve learnt and am still learning is to strip back the effects of life’s stresses and strains so that I can regain my sensitivity to our numerous forms of communication so that I can accept your communications when you wish to converse. Your wish is ever so important, firstly for yourself; having the knowledge that I’m not prying and secondly for me, it’ll be shear overload for me if I accept everyone’s communications.

As an Alexander Technique teacher, I need this sensitivity to your communications, even to those as yet undefined methods of communication. This communication is enhanced by being aware of myself and my environment in each and every moment; a quiet listening. And equally a quiet talking, Listening implies hearing sounds, what I’m writing is not about just sounds but all the ways you are communicating, equally talking is not just about making verbal sound but all the ways I can communicate to you that you will receive information. We are constantly sending and receiving non-verbal information to each other, a smile, a connection eye to eye, the way you respond physically to stimuli, your response to touch. Alexander Technique Teachers do a lot of touch, normally somewhere on your back, it’s the easiest way to sense your kinaesthetic activity and also to allow you to get to notice your own kinaesthetic self.

There will be most likely a conversation to stimulate you to notice something. Perhaps you can experiment now;

“Do you notice what you are doing with your toes whilst reading this blog?”

Perhaps you stopped reading to wiggly your toes, that’s absolutely fine, now can you notice your toes, without wiggling them and continue reading? Does your sensation of yourself increase by this simple activity?

Is the Alexander Technique for everyone?


Of course I would say yes, the Alexander Technique has helped me immensely, I manage asthma without drugs, my depression and anxiety is much reduced and when they flare up I have the tools to snip them in the bud. Asthma, depression and anxiety are now managed with the tools I’ve learnt through the Alexander Technique, so go course the Alexander Technique is for everyone.

I do have a ‘but’.

If you believe that the world, your society, your family is responsible for your behaviours, whether good or bad behaviours then perhaps the Alexander Technique isn’t for you.

If you believe you have a right to an easy life and other must support your dream, then perhaps the Alexander Technique isn’t for you.

If you discover these dreams and believes don’t work for you anymore and want to discover something different then the Alexander Technique could be for you.

Learning to increase your awareness of yourself and your surroundings isn’t hard to learn however if your ego thinks otherwise it is extremely hard to learn as your ego will stop you. Egos are strange things, they just want to be in control and keep on doing the same other thing whether it is good or bad for you.

Egos like to be in charge.

What the Alexander Technique will teach you is that you have choices, one action may be the egos way however you have more choices that may lead to other actions. These other actions will probably be better than the good old ego way.

From my self discovery, asthma, depression and anxiety were my ego’s way to ‘help’ me cope with life. This helped years ago: I got breathless, then I didn’t need to go the school and got lots of love from my mother. What a fantastic plan for a child, lots of love and skived from school.

A win win situation.

This successful plan then morphed in to other uses, mostly successfully, I didn’t do what I didn’t want to do. Win win again.

This win win plan morphed into something horrible.

I could leave my house without using my asthma pump at the door and a few more to get to the car.

My life stopped.

I’ve thought about this for a long time, distilling my actions down to a simple recipe; I don’t want to do something, seek approval and get lots of love from the person you love, repeat when desired.

I was exercising my right to have an easy life and relying on the support of others. This is OK as child but as an adult!

What the Alexander Technique has taught me is the fundamental rule that I must first love myself before I can love anyone or anything else. As with learning anything new, the route to understanding is a contorted twisted maze of dead ends that must be visited before you can discover the centre of the truth. Then you can use all the dead ends to mix with the truth to have your own wisdom of what love is.

If you want to let go of your childish ways then perhaps the Alexander Technique is a way to discovery yourself. As Rudyard Kipling wrote –

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

What is the Alexander Technique?


I’ve written what it is many times, yesterday I explained that it is teaching co-ordination, co-ordination of the whole human entity with all its boundaries, all the boundaries you care to know or think about and some you didn’t know existed.

It’s the co-ordination that you wish you can have so that you can be better at whatever you aspire to be.

Many of us spend many years and a lot of money to learn how to do something, perhaps your job, vocation, or you hobby. The list is endless; sports, musician, actor, poet, writer, doctor, nurse, dentist, lecturer, decorator, chef, hula hoop maker… . The list is endless, we are all trained in some activity that would benefit with better co-ordination.

This improved co-ordination is what the Alexander Technique teaches.

Improving your co-ordination by teaching you how to be in balance with whatever you want to do and whomever you want to communicate or interact with.

The art is noticing how you are reacting instead of being in autopilot. Taking more control of your reactions your performance will improve.

The by-products of improved co-ordination are that pain will soften and may eventually disappear, you will be happier, there will be more time in your day.

You will feel great!

Why not give it a try, if you don’t like feeling free, almost weightless, brighter and happier this is not for you but then again you will never know until you try it. Unfortunately words can’t describe the freedom and aliveness that being in co-ordination brings.

Who’s Bonkers?


I’ve been working with a couple of therapists over the past few weeks, offering them a series of 6 free Alexander Technique sessions, another therapist is joining next week the 6 free sessions, The objective of these sessions is firstly for me to practice on willing volunteers who wouldn’t normally have Alexander sessions, and also to demonstrate to them through their experience what the Alexander Technique is. Part of the deal is to produce 7 short videos for them to reflect back on their changes and also for myself to use to for promotion of myself and the Alexander Technique.

I’ve never quite worked out what the definitive definition of the Alexander Technique is, my definitions change as quick as the clouds pass over me. What I do know is that I feel lighter, freer and more alive when I apply my Alexander thinking.

I let my dogs be close by, normally near my feet, if my client is content. My dogs seem to love the session, they are a mirror of the energy in my studio. They are all busy when the session starts and very soon rather chilled; all on their backs chilling.

Not quite so chilled but having fun

Helping others to raise their own awareness is key for a successful Alexander session, I’ve got several methods to help; firstly by talking about what they notice in the room and the spectacular view I have from my studio. Noticing is important, noticing naturally brings awareness and quiet, instead of being busy about the future and or the past. Awareness of your environment brings about a change in quality of your use with a wonderful calmness.

This awareness itself is fantastic but its only cracking open the door very slightly; my goal is to introduce total awareness whilst in activity, this is the power of the Alexander Technique.

The difficulty with total awareness is that your habits will be resistant to what you are being taught; we have safety in our habits that protect us from feeling different even if these habits are not so good for us.

We are all bonkers!

Letting habits go is the key to change however you and I have many devious ways of maintaining out habits even if they aren’t helpful. we build habits to protect ourselves then hold onto them and use them even when they are no longer needed.

We are all bonkers!

There are several ways to attempt to change habits:

  • deep meaningful conversations with others or yourself
  • getting fit
  • being busy
  • getting help from others

I guess you have all used one or all of these methods, I have, some have helped but generally I slowly gravitated back to my old habits.

I work differently, you will have fun, you will laugh, you will feel free, you will feel light, you will be buzzing with life.

These feeling will last for sometime, with one session you will discover what is available to you but it will fade as you try to recreate the feelings. With further sessions you will increasingly discover what is needed to maintain your freedom and aliveness that allows your old habits fade.

How can I rid myself from pain?


  • DO YOU ever have the thought of ah, I’ve arrived, then stop and switch everything off?

What I mean is switching your awareness off! Sometimes this is a very good thing and sometimes not so good. If it’s automatic then you don’t have the option to decide if it is good or not so good.

  • DO YOU seem to get pain somewhere when you do a particular activity?

Being in auto may be the reason why you have pain, you will have a habitual movement plan that you use that triggers pain, wouldn’t it be great to renew your movement plan!

There are many ways to suppress or relieve pain but somehow does your pain keeps coming back?

  • How can you get sustained relief from pain?

These questions can be answered by raising your awareness of yourself, you can get part way on your own however to get the full embodiment of yourself you will need help. You need a mirror of some sort, a real mirror, watch yourself on video or get someone with the skills I have to observe what you do in activity and then work together to develop a new movement plan that is pain free, this may seem impossible to achieve, I know it is not as I’ve witnessed it many times.

Pain may be coming back because of how you do things, you may work in auto without noticing very much; I’m sure you have wondered how

  • Your tea was made,
  • You missed a road junction on a road you travel regularly on,
  • If you cleaned your teeth this morning?

We are odd creatures; things get so habitual we don’t know we have done them.

This is equally true to how we do things,

  • Straining our eyes to look at something,
  • Looking busy by pulling a face.
  • Straining yourself to lift something then discovering it was really light, then possibly jarring your back because it was too easy.

Much of our pain comes from an activity that we did and you probably did the activity not in a very conscious way.

Pain is your body shouting really loudly to STOP doing it that way!

There is a way to stop most pain and that is to learn how to do things consciously. Meditation and other modalities will help; you can even learn consciousness on your own.  It’s relatively easy to have a high level of consciousness when being still or working through a directed activity; the real test of consciousness is when we undertake your familiar activities whilst maintaining a high level of consciousness. This embodied use of yourself will reduce the risk of pain and possible injury.

Alexander Technique teachers are trained to be your mirror to help you see when you loose your embodiment; then offer ways to regain it. More so, we teacher you to realize that embodiment is available to you and everyone; it is only a conscious choice that many never realize they have this choice. I’ve found that many are very resistant to discovering there own embodied consciousness; I guess they are comfortable with their pain and beliefs; their pain is who they are but is it really?

Little do they know life is a whole lot better without the restrictions of pain and doubt?

  • Doubt stops investigation and experimentation,
  • Doubt keeps you where your are,
  • Doubt keeps you safe or so you think,
  • Doubt will stop you rediscovering the freedom and ease you had when you were a child.
  • Doubt has loaded you with pain by continually holding you back mentally and physically.

By improving your embodied consciousness doubt has less control over what you think and do; life becomes joyous and fun, the things you thought were troublesome melt away to nothingness. Please believe me this has happened to me and through applying the Alexander Technique.

Life can be a breeze; the choice is yours.


One of the activities I really hate but secretly love is running, it is one of those activities that I used to hold my breathe as I prepared to run hence I didn’t get far before I was out of breath!

A pretty obvious outcome but I couldn’t understand why I was always out off breath; it has only been in the recent years that I worked out that I do hold my breath, in fact I hold my breath to start most activities.

You may think this is a strange thing to do, I do now, and many of us have particular foibles when we start an activity. For strenuous activities including running I held my breath.

In fact, I held my breath to start any activity! I wonder what you do?

Now lets turn this around.

From my perspective, getting ready to do something is your ego getting ready by calling up its favourite but not so useful habits; my habit of breathe holding. If I quieten my ego then I’m ready to run and I don’t need to hold my breath, things just happen.

Being ready is a completely different sensation to getting ready.

Being ready I feel light and buoyant, all my joints have the freedom to move, my thinking is livelier and brighter.

Getting ready I feel heavy and locked, my joints are tight and reluctant to move, my thinking is wondering what is going to happen, as I write and experiment with my thoughts, my breath is becoming laboured, butterflies are appearing in my stomach.

Being ready and getting ready are both thoughts generated from my mind and I can choose which thought, I much prefer ‘being ready’ to ‘getting ready’ it is a much happier place however I still have a lingering habit of not choosing and going straight for ‘getting ready’.

The trick is to notice, pause for a moment and then choose. How to choose takes skill and plenty of practice; this is what I teach. We all have the capacity to be ready, with lightness, buoyancy with freedom to move; we just don’t choose it.

Most of our life we have been cajoled, bullied, taught, encouraged to get ready for things by holding, hunkering down, freezing, grimacing so we can demonstrate to others that we are getting ready; I was like that with running.

Last week I decided to take up running again, I joined a 0 to 5 km club, it was into the 6thweek of training, my first for several years. I choose to ‘be ready’, no ‘getting ready’, no holding my breath; it was a breeze. I really enjoyed the run, the circuit we ran was about 3.5 km, dispersed with periods of running and walking. The moments when I noticed I was starting to try harder because of a hill or I was drifting away from the pack, I refreshed on thoughts of being ready and my lightness and buoyancy returned; the gradient became easier and I floated closer to the pack.

We all have this power to choose but many think that life must be hard and difficult if it is to be at all successful, in fact the opposite is true!

Life can be a breeze; the choice is yours.

It’s 1am in the morning,

a time I like to be asleep,

I like my 8 hours of sleep a night,

tonight it isn’t going to happen,

I suddenly woke up,

so time for a cup of tea on my own,

even my dogs didn’t stir,

they like their sleep

so do I!

worrying about things wakes me up,

why tonight?

I know why, you don’t need to know.

You need to know this is what anxiety is like

waking up suddenly for no apparent reason

waking up suddenly for a reason I can’t tell you

waking up worried

when the best thing is to sleep

so I’m refreshed to face the worry,

not blurry in the morning

Oh the joys of life when your anxious.

I have tools to help me

But

Sometimes it is best to let anxiety run

The best tool is to talk to someone,

to let it all out

At 1am all is peaceful

Except

For me!!!!

Suddenly my stomach pain has subsided

I’m breathing again

I’m calming down

Time for more tea

My anxiety is calming

Being a human being not a human doing


This week is Mental Health week, the hidden pandemic that we don’t like to talk about.

It is great that we can now speak about it but have we done enough, are some of the concerns just false platitudes of people stuck in their own mental health problems.

Suffering from mental health problems is shit; nobody really understands your own unique mental health problems.

There’s lots of help from lots of modalities, all trying to wedge your unique mental health problem into their niche. I may be hard on these wonderful people that have a deep urge to help others.

Remember this in my perspective and I may be completely delusional on this matter. I’m happy to be proved otherwise.

Many modalities are sticking plasters for a headache. They work for a while whilst you believe it is helping you. They add another layer to your thinking to smooth over and hide your personal unique problem. Your personal unique problem will break out of these layers when it needs to; like Dr Ford recently with Kavanaugh.

Plastering over things just postpones the problem, I know because that is what I do, but to a lesser extent now. Now if I feel shit I tell someone, I did this morning, hence this blog, thank you, you know who you are.

What has worked for me is instead of adding layers is removing the layers and meeting my problems naked and vulnerable. It sounds very, very scary; it is the first time and possibly the second time and the third. Now it is joyful, standing naked and vulnerable and letting my problems trying to get to me. (Standing naked is a metaphor; well most of the time, best not done in public!) Opening up to myself and braving my vulnerability is fantastic, terrifying, weird, freeing, stupid, enlightening; initially changing rapidly in the kaleidoscope of my thought. Slowly my thoughts slow to thoughts of freedom and joy, sometimes with tears of joy.
You may think this is mindfulness; it is but a whole lot more. We all have this within us, all we have to do is find it.

It has taken me, since the discovery that I have been suffering from anxiety, about ten years to write this. Some of these years I can’t remember. What I know is that I’ve been trying and trying to resolve and get over my unique personal problem.

Recently I’ve discovered, trying and trying to resolve and getting over my unique personal problem doesn’t work!

I wish I knew that earlier, the answer is not trying and not getting over my unique personal problem. Trying just adds layers to smoother the problem and the problem is me!  I’m trying to hide from myself.

The secret is to be; be yourself, be balanced with gravity, be now, be here, not drifting off somewhere in your thoughts. All this is easier to say than do but doing is the wrong approach, it is being, being a human being not a human doing.

I teach how to be an being, not using unnecessary energy and not being a human doing. The benefits are that life is freer, happier, joyous, loving, beautiful, plentiful, and peaceful. Life is like it is now, the same family and friends but much, much better.

My unique personal problem is still with me as it is me, now we live in harmony with each other. My problem does shout at times for me to do something, now I know how to return to a being.

A helping hand


I’ve been writing blogs about my Alexander Technique discoveries for a few years, my discovery is how the Alexander Technique has helped me with firstly asthma, which I can say has completely disappeared; if there are any signs I use the Alexander Technique to quieten down and allow any signs of asthma to vaporise.

Secondly to manage anxiety, the Alexander technique is a wonderful tool to help with anxiety, I’ve had plenty of triggers recently to fire up anxiety however I now have the tools to help me quieten down anxiety and get on with my life.

I’ve very rarely had the typical problems that many people discover the Alexander Technique for, namely;

  • lower back pain,
  • neck pain,
  • shoulder pain,
  • carpel tunnel syndrome
  • in fact almost any type of physical pain.

To make things clear the Alexander Technique doesn’t fix anything, it is training that teaches you how to think differently. 

A friend of mine eventually came to me recently as the wanted to reduce the number of pain killers; they have had lower back pain for longer than I can remember. They’d  taken up previous offers of my help sort of reluctantly so recently I’d decided that I’d wait to be asked for help. Their request eventually came, I helped them and their pain mitigated for a while.

The Alexander Technique has many facets that can be investigated and experimented with. The base of all these facets is constructive conscious control of yourself. This needs practice, like learning to dance, sing, read, write, etc. When I helped my friend, they with my help switched on their constructive conscious control and their pain mitigated however has soon as I stopped working with them their pain slowly reappeared. As I wrote above, this is training and sometimes it takes awhile to cope on your own with new thoughts and ideas, just like speaking a foreign language.

It takes practice and sometimes lots of it especially if something is deeply embedded in your habits. The Alexander Technique is training where you learn how to return to how nature intended, being in balance with gravity and time. Where you are not leaning forward, backward and to the side fighting gravity, you are in balance with gravity. You are not guessing about the future or blaming the past, you are here balanced with time.

Achieving this balance doesn’t happen over night, it will take a while to slowly make small changes that will manifest in huge positive changes to your life. It has for me so I don’t see why can’t for you.
